Telomeres and Aging: What They Mean

Telomeres are repetitive DNA-protein structures at chromosome ends. Their biology is associated with cellular aging, but a single telomere claim does not provide a simple meter for whole-body aging or longevity.

What telomeres do

Telomeres help protect chromosome ends. Their length and regulation vary by cell type and are influenced by complex biological processes.

Why simple claims are risky

An intervention affecting a biomarker does not automatically establish improved health or longer life. The endpoint and quality of human evidence matter.

The bigger picture

Telomeres are one part of a much larger aging research landscape that also includes cellular senescence, metabolism, mitochondrial biology and other processes.
