Cellular senescence describes a state in which cells stop dividing and undergo other changes. Senescence has useful biological roles as well as associations with aging and disease processes.
Why senescence is complicated
Senescent cells are not simply “bad cells.” Context, tissue, timing and biological function matter, which is why simplistic “remove old cells” marketing can overstate the science.
Senescence and aging research
Researchers study how senescent cells accumulate and signal, and whether modifying these processes can affect health outcomes. Translating experimental findings into safe human interventions is a separate challenge.
